Buying a Used Car in Escazú, Santa Ana & Atenas: Expat Guide to Costa Rica's Central Valley
The Central Valley west of San José (Escazú, Santa Ana, Ciudad Colón, Atenas and Grecia) is where many expats choose to live: close to Juan Santamaría airport (SJO), hospitals, malls and services, with cooler weather than the coast.
The car you need here is different from the one you'd buy for the beach. Here's what we've learned.
What kind of car do you need?
City and highway: most roads are paved, but traffic on the main routes into San José can be heavy at rush hour. An automatic sedan or compact SUV makes daily life much easier.
Hills and steep driveways: Escazú's upper hills, Atenas and Grecia have steep streets. Good brakes and enough power matter more than off-road ability. If your home is on a gravel road up the mountain, consider AWD or 4x4.
San José's driving restriction: on weekdays, central San José limits which cars can circulate depending on the last digit of the plate. If you'll commute into the city, ask us how it affects you before choosing.
What to check before you buy

✅ Air conditioning and electrical system
✅ Clean title: no liens, no unpaid fines, marchamo and Dekra up to date
✅ No major accident or flood history
✅ Real mileage and service history
Popular choices in the Central Valley
Toyota RAV4, Toyota Corolla Cross, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Rush and Hyundai Tucson are among the most requested by our clients in the area: comfortable, efficient and easy to resell.
