Used Cars Under $25,000 in Costa Rica: What You Can Really Get (and What to Avoid)
It's one of the first questions we get: "Can I find a good used car in Costa Rica for under $25,000?" The honest answer is yes, but you need to know what to expect and where the traps are.
Why used cars cost more here
Cars in Costa Rica carry high import taxes, so used cars keep their value much longer than in the US or Canada. A car that would be cheap back home can still cost a good amount here. That's also why well-kept older Toyotas, Suzukis and Hyundais are so popular: they're reliable and easy to resell.
What you can realistically get under $25,000
Older SUVs and 4x4s: well-maintained models with more years and kilometers, like an older Toyota 4Runner, RAV4, Suzuki Vitara or Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Great if you need clearance for gravel roads.
Sedans and small cars: a Toyota Corolla, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent or similar with a few more years. Perfect for the Central Valley and paved roads.
The key: with this budget, the condition and history of the car matter more than the year. A well-cared-for older car beats a newer one with a hidden problem.
Red flags to avoid
❌ Liens or legal notes on the title (gravámenes / anotaciones)
❌ Unpaid marchamo or traffic fines
❌ Accident or flood history the seller doesn't mention
❌ A price that looks too good to be true on Marketplace
❌ Sellers who pressure you to send a deposit before seeing the car
