Buying a Used Car in Guanacaste: Expat Guide for Liberia, Tamarindo, Playas del Coco & Nosara

2 min read

Guanacaste is one of the favorite places for expats in Costa Rica: sunny beaches, Liberia's international airport (LIR) and towns like Tamarindo, Playas del Coco, Flamingo and Nosara. It's also a place where the right car makes a huge difference, and the wrong one can cost you a lot.

Here's what we've learned helping people buy cars in Guanacaste.

What kind of car do you need in Guanacaste?

Liberia, Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Flamingo: the main roads are paved. A sedan or small SUV works fine for most daily life.

Nosara, Sámara back roads, the hills and the countryside: expect gravel, steep driveways and, in rainy season (roughly May to November), mud and river crossings. Here a real 4x4 with good ground clearance is the smart choice.

Living up a hill or outside town? Ask about the road in the rainy season before you choose the car, not after.

What to check on a Guanacaste car

Heat, dust and salt air are hard on vehicles here. Before buying, we always check:

✅ Air conditioning (you'll use it every day)

✅ Rust underneath, especially on cars that lived by the beach

✅ Suspension and tires, after years of gravel roads

✅ Clean title: no liens, no unpaid fines, Dekra up to date

Popular choices for Guanacaste

Toyota RAV4, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Fortuner, Suzuki Jimny and Suzuki Vitara are among the most requested by our clients in the area: reliable, easy to service and easy to resell.

Not here yet? We can have it ready when you land at LIR

We find and inspect the car, send you photos and a full report, handle the title transfer in English, and can deliver it at Liberia airport. Leaving for a few weeks or months? We also offer car storage close to LIR.
